What is Bitcoin?Bitcoin is an encrypted digital currency created and held electronically. You can use Bitcoins stored on your mobile device to pay for on-line transactions or for purchases at retail locations that accepts them (e.g. SFU Bookstore). Bitcoin is both a payment network, similar to PayPal, and also its own currency. Bitcoin operates independent of a central banking authority and runs on a peer-to-peer (P2P) netwrok, similar to Bittorent. From a user perspective, Bitcoin can be considered pretty much like cash for the Internet.
What is the Bitcoin "AVM"?The Bitcoin Automated Vending Machine allows you to buy Bitcoins using Canadian dollar bills and store them in a wallet app on your mobile device. The AVM machine at each of the SFU Bookstores are operated by BitSent Inc., an independent Canadian company. A small transaction fee is charged, and included in the Bitcoin price, for AVM transaction.
What can I do with Bitcoin?You can send Bitcoins to friends as easy as sending an email or use them to purchase goods and services wherever Bitcoins are accepted. Well-known companies like NewEgg, Overstock.com, Dell, Microsoft, and Expedia are already accepting Bitcoins for purchases. In Vancouver, there are many merchants including restaurants and cafes that accept the currency. You can also donate Bitcoins to SFU's Advancement department to support various initiatives.
How can I use Bitcoin? You need to have a Bitcoin wallet on your mobile device. Smartphone users can download the "Blockchain" wallet from the app store. The free app will allow you to receive and spend Bitcoins. We recommend visiting Blockchain.info to find out more.
How much is one Bitcoin worth?Bitcoin's price is determined by the market forces of supply and demand and will consequently fluctuate. The AVM screen shows the latest Canadian dollar price of one Bitcoin. This price can change constantly, like most currencies. As of May 21, 2015, one Bitcoin was valued at $305.28.
Do I have to buy a whole Bitcoin?You do not have to buy one entire Bitcoin; instead, similar to cash, a Bitcoin can be divided into smaller fractions. The Canadian dollar, as an example, can be broken down into 100 subunits. One Bitcoin can be divided into 10 million subunits. You can purchase as little as CAD $5 worth of Bitcoins at the AVM.
What are the benefits of Bitcoin compared to Debit or Credit?Bitcoin transactions are very low in fees compared to other payment methods. Because retailers save money, some are happy to offer discounts or rewards on goods purchased with Bitcoins.

How can I buy Bitcoins from the AVM for the first time?Please follow the Bitcoin wallet app download instructions posted on the AVM in order to set up a wallet. Then, follow the remaining steps as shown on the AVM's screen and accompanying poster.
Does the government recognize Bitcoin?Bitcoin in Canada is not considered legal tender but is recognized by Canada Revenue Agency as a type of commodity, similar to gold or silver. Businesses accepting Bitcoins must follow proper tax reporting procedures and Bitcoin investors must report trading gains and losses.
